Out of Africa

Hello friends! I am back from my trip as of monday evening and although I'm swamped with overdue work and homework, I wanted to throw up some pictures. Here's a few from my very very busy and incredibly awesome trip.

Famous mud mosque of Djenne (UNESCO world heritage site)

The morning view from my mat on the roof where I slept the first night we trekked in Dogon Country.

Dogon village where we spent another night on the roof (if you look to the right just above center, you can see the campement with the mats on part of the roof).

Chief of the village where we visited a Peace Corps volunteer for a day.

Yes, termite mounds can really get that big (and even bigger!)

Sunset on the Bani River in the port city of Mopti.

Regular traffic scene in the bustling capital city of Bamako, my home for two years. The locals have taken to calling it Obamako. *g*

My adorable goddaughter and my future sister-in-law. :-)

Wow Sula, these pictures are just incredible! What an amazing time you must have had.

And your goddaughter & future s-i-law are just gorgeous. Will they be attending your wedding?

OMG - how cute is your goddaughter?! I want to reach through that picture and pinch her cheeks!

Fantastic pictures - and I'd probably pass out standing that close to a termite mound. LOL

Yay for photos! I'm with Wendy about the termite mound. And your goddaughter is so cute!! How was sleeping on the roof? Did you have mosquito netting?

That termite mound is taller than me! And that doesn't happen very often.

I'm so glad you had a great time. Your goddaughter is adorable! :) I love that questioning look on her face. Looks like she's thinking "What are you doing???"

Yay! It's always great when a good time is had, esp. after anticipating it. :)

Hi Sula! Glad you are home safe and sound. I have to echo how great the photos are. Take a rest, catch your breath and then tell us all about it.

thank you all for your nice words. And for joining me in my squee-age over my goddaughter. She's totally precious. Can't talk yet but totters around everywhere. I doubt anyone from the family will be able to come to the wedding. Not only is it super expensive for plane tix, but people from Africa don't get visas to visit America. Poor folks from poor countries are second-class citizens of the world. And that's the reality of it. So yeah, our wedding...just my family and our mutual friends. :(

On a more positive note...the termite mounds are empty. At least that one was. heh. So just a big mound of dirt really.

Sleeping on the roof was fab. It was actually quite cool at night and since it is dry season, no mosquitoes to speak of. Or at least not enough to bother with a net. Now if only someone could figure out a way to filter the braying donkeys at 3am...

Welcome back!! What great pictures. It looks like a place out of time. And your little goddaughter is adorable. That's sad that they won't be able to make it to your wedding.

Welcome back Sula! Great pics and adorable goddaughter - kind of want to reach into the photo and give her a cuddle ;-).

Oh God, I've heard so many stories about how awful, humiliating and downright expensive it is to get visas to the US or Europe if you come from a developing country. The worst thing about it is the utter lack of transparency after paying what amounts to a small fortune for just the attempt. It's even worse when you just want the visa for bloody TRANSIT...

Anyway, just means that you have to go back to Mali pronto and have a "proper" wedding.

So, you've been back five days. Where's the good stuff?

I love the pictures of the mud mosque (I'd never heard of it, but it looks incredible) and the termite mound (I had no idea they could get that big!).

Hi Sula!
I know I sound like a broken record, but oh my, your goddaughter is the most adorable little thing! Your photographs are fantastic... thanks so much for sharing!

I'm sorry your fiance's family won't be able to attend your wedding. :(
