Happy Loving Day

Loving Day is an annual celebration held on June 12, the anniversary of the 1967 United States Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia which struck down all anti-miscegenation laws remaining in 16 states (according to wikipedia)

It's mind-blowing to me to think that some 40-odd years ago my relationship would have been illegal in the state where I currently live. Heck, our future president's parents would have been criminals in 16 states at the time of his birth just for the fact of their marriage. Amazing.

So I hug my loved one tight to me and celebrate our multi-colored, multi-ethnic, multi-racial, multi-lingual, multi-cultural love. Diversity is beautiful. I pray that someday soon my gay and lesbian friends will be able to claim the same equal rights that I take for granted.

Happy Loving Day!

Wow. that is amazing that it is such a short time ago. My ex is African and so my son is mixed race. I'm glad, for his sake, that so much change has happened in such a short time.

Happy Loving Day! :)

I only learned about Loving Day last year and its truly a wonderful thing to celebrate. My husband and I are also of two different races and I admit its a bit comforting to know that interracial relationships have always been legal in New Jersey where we live. Although sadly, just because the government accepts mixed race unions, it doesn't mean neighbors, friends or even family members do. :(

I too hope that someday very soon gay and lesbian unions become legal everywhere as well.

Thanks for the post, Sula. :)

Why can't we all just love each other no matter what we are and give big hugs all around?

marg, I wish for your son the same things I hope for my future children. A society that celebrates diversity rather than fears it.

Christine, I thought of you when I made this post. You and your hot hubby and gorgeous kids. An inspiration. :)

This is the first year that I was made aware of Loving Day, but next year I would like to organize some sort of party/event. Imo, it's important for people to be aware of how recent our history is. In fact, I was reading last night that in 2000 when the Alabama constitution was being amended to get rid of these anti-miscegnation language, fully 40% of voters opposed removing the hateful bigoted text. Can you imagine? That's only 8 years ago. We may have come a long way since the 60s but we're certainly not 'there' yet.

You two make such a cute couple!! Hard to believe that not that long ago marriage was banned just because of colour. I'm glad it no longer is - but I'm sad it is still such an issue with people.
I know I'm late but Happy Day After Loving Day.
