Saharan chic

Today was international day at school. Since I have spent most of my life trotting about the globe, I have plenty of interesting clothing to pull out for occasions like these. Today I decided to wear one of my favorite outfits from Mali. I got it in Timbuktu, so in fact it is a better example of the northern, desert tribes than of typical Malian clothing. At the event, they needed extra people to carry flags, so I volunteered to carry Mauritania's since what I was wearing is pretty much standard everyday dress. And I am probably the only person on the campus that actually knows where Mauritania is let alone has spent time there. lol. Annnnyways, it was fun. You can't help but turn a few heads when sashaying across campus in an electric blue gauzy robe that flutters in the breeze. I hunted through my old photos and found one taken of this outfit when I was visiting my parents in England a few years ago. Man, I wish I still could get braids like that done.

Thank you both, you are too kind. :) I do miss my braids, although after having my hair done in various cornrows and braids and whatnot, I kept losing too much hair (it puts a lot of stress on it) and had to stop. *sigh* It made getting ready in the morning so EASY too. oh well.

Many, many years ago, when I bound a braid for months in bright embroidery thread and hung beads from the end...well, I went to unwind the damn thing and there were about 4 hairs holding my arty-farty hair to my head. Yea. Wee bald spot for grad school.
